We were honoured to be invited along to the official unveiling and commemoration of Old Billy last month. The roundel had been put in place at the site where the old well used to be. The roundel was a celebration of the life of Old Billy, The Oldest Horse. This roundel had a special pattern made which was carved by hand. The pattern was then placed into a special air set mould and the cast iron poured to create a plaque that will stand the test of time, just like Old Billy. The plaque was cast with rivulets in the border to allow the water to flow away from its domed surface. It was left as a natural hand-painted finish so that the lettering would naturally age and rust to give an authentic age-old quality.
We very much enjoyed hearing all about the efforts of the local volunteers who have transformed this area around Woolston Lock. It is now a beautiful area to discover and well worth a visit.
